… I recently finished this book by a favorite person of mine on LinkedIn. Alexander is an amazing example of what a leader is all about. He not only talks about leading with empathy and compassion, he exemplifies it in his interactions with others. One of my favorite quotes from his book is “Being a leader is more than just wanting to lead. Leaders have empathy for others and a keen ability to find the best in people – not the worst – by truly caring for others.” – Henry Gruland
Unlike A Boss shows those in a leadership position how to go forward to create a safe work environment, where everyone is working cohesively. Instead of being told that I should never have become a teacher, there should have been a safe space to discuss what was working or not working in each of our positions.

Reads much like Dale Carnegie’s “How to win friends and influence people.” It’s clear, concise and to the point… which is extremely convenient.

Alexander captures the essences of what leadership behaviors should look like. By telling his story, and allowing us an inside look into his past, we’re able to grab onto the learning tools that help make leaders great.

This book is a how-to reference guide for placing a priority on people! It is a quick read that draws you in and keeps you coming back for more.

What an incredible read & book that has long been overdue. Changes the idea, thoughts, & concepts of a proper leader building good quality work culture is needed. This book by Alexander Andrews covers these issues & brings to light real processes needed for change. Well done.

It’s not often I take the time to post reviews but I feel this book warrants it. I enjoyed not only the author’s reflections on the poor leadership experiences he has seen in his career, but also how he transitions these into tips to do better yourself! It’s an easy trap to fall into, your ‘boss’ is a tyrant so you become one too… he proves this doesn’t have to be the case and inspires the opposite. I can’t recommend highly enough.

I love this book by Alexander Andrews so much I bought the digital and paperback versions! We spend so much of our time working so our leaders and managers can have a huge impact on our lives. This book sheds light on the importance and responsibility leaders have to ensure the impact is positive, not negative. In my life I’ve had the unfortunate experience of a horrible boss; one that made my work and personal life stressful. This book makes me feel seen and heard while addressing this bad boss behavior. Leading with empathy is so important but hard for so many and Alexander helps leaders understand how in this book! I suggest getting a copy for yourself and a co-worker, maybe for your company’s leadership library!

A first class book in getting the best out of everyone in the workplace. The author takes into account the varied walks of life that many people come from and the best ways to engage with them one on one. A must read for those in management who are not connecting with their employees in a positive and productive way.

I like diving into a book without too much foresight on what I’m about to read.
Keeps it fresh when I turn the page.
Undoubtedly, as I read on, I often felt like Andrews had taken a few pages out of my personal journal!
The correlations to life and every day occurrences was refreshing.

I have read many books in leadership, and taken course too…but this book is a most have. The author did an excellent job, brilliantly organizing different practices that constitute an engaged and people first leadership. Describing how to become the best leader through positivity, work/life balance, listening, EQ, active communicating, etc. “Public Praise, Private Criticism” “Don’t let perfect become the enemy of Good”.

I absolutely loved this book. A book on positive leadership, but one that also ‘highlighted’ the ‘bad’ leadership qualities as well, and it is a book I think should be mandatory reading for anyone heading into any type of leadership role. Truthfully, the book highlighted things that seem like ‘common’ sense…but also seem to be lacking in society. I also think this would make a wonderful book for just about anyone to read…because lets face—we’re all leaders at one point in our lives…I give UNLIKE A BOSS five out five stars and recommend it for any book club to read and talk about.

Unlike a Boss condenses the wisdom of a true practitioner on the art of leading people. Don’t be fooled by the conversational tone adopted by the author. The book is dense on learning that can be adopted by anyone willing to get the best out of people in a work environment in a positive, constructive and truthful manner. I love the people-centric approach that emphasises empathy and honesty as a way – quite possibly the only one – to build trust and maximise engagement. Being a good leader requires maturity, emotional intelligence and comes with time, but if you follow Alexander’s advice in this book you’ll be on a fast track to achieve it.

What an awesome read! The book is easy to follow and I really enjoyed the conversational style of the writer. I wish I had the opportunity to read this a long time ago!

I’ve completed my fair share of business and leadership courses over the years and have often questioned their practical value and utility. Unlike A Boss is well-written, easy to follow, and really hits the mark by providing relatable and practical leadership challenges and tips. Chapters are concise and thought-provoking; I found myself reflecting on my own leadership style, often. I’ve shared this book with my team because there are many elements valuable in a peer-to-peer space too (not limited to just leader-subordinate). An engaging balance of ‘what to do’ and ‘what NOT to do’. Highly recommended!

Truly inspiring and well written! Unlike a Boss is an informative, easy to read and resourceful book. The writing style is conversational which makes it easy and captivating to follow, certainly making it hard to put down! The addition of first hand experiences really allows you to relate to the author on a whole different level. The inclusion of insightful advice provides a useful lesson on the importance of positive leadership and the imperative impact it has on individuals. Certainly a must read!

This book is an amazing pocket guide for LEADERS “what to do” and for BOSSES (“what not to do”) – if you work with PEOPLE this book is an opportunity for a reflection about your leadership style.

Unlike a Boss is an awesome read!! Certainly a must have guide for everyone, no matter your position at work. The conversational style is easy to follow together with the author’s insights and examples from his own experiences is captivating and truly resonates with the reader. It ultimately provides for invaluable lessons as to being the best boss you can be, or the boss you should have! I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

A practical and enjoyable read with so many real world examples of leadership practices that will help empower and engage your team. It also shines a light on poor leadership practices and opens your mind to simple but highly effective strategies for building a better workplace. The author is honest, down to earth and helpful. You don’t need to be a team leader to get something out of this book – anyone who aspires to build a positive workplace culture can gain a lot from Unlike a Boss.

Andrews clearly knows his stuff – the lessons he has learnt throughout his career and the advice he shares is relevant, realistic and spot on. This is a management book I’ll be referring to time and time again.
